Giresun Castle

I would now like to introduce you to Giresun Castle, one of the city's most significant historical and natural landmarks. Situated on a commanding hill in the city center, the castle served as a strategic defensive stronghold throughout history, allowing for control over both land and sea. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, the prevailing view is that the structure was built in the 2nd century BC during the reign of Pharnaces I, King of Pontus. The castle consists of two sections: an inner fortress and an outer fortress. The surviving ramparts, towers, cisterns, wells, and rock-carved chambers offer valuable insights into the site's past military and residential functions. Giresun Castle is also protected as a first-degree archaeological site. While exploring the area, one enjoys not only the historical ruins but also a unique panoramic view overlooking the Giresun city center and the Black Sea. The presence of the Topal Osman Agha Memorial Tomb and the martyrs' memorial at the summit further establishes the castle as a key site for understanding Giresun’s historical heritage.
