Located in the Nizamiye Neighborhood of Giresun’s city center, the Yüzbaşı Suyu Fountain is recognized today as one of the city’s historic fountains. Historical records indicate that it was built in 1933. A marble inscription on the structure—believed to have been added at a later date—serves as a key element in revealing the fountain's history. Regarding its architecture, the fountain presents a design that is quite simple yet distinctive. Built using cut stone and masonry techniques, it features a rectangular plan. Its west-facing front façade is framed by rectangular projections on either side. The structure has a single water spout, and a trough runs along the entire length of the façade at the front. I would particularly like to draw your attention to the *ayna taşı*—the decorative stone panel behind the spout. A crescent-and-star motif appears above the point where the water flows. This small yet significant detail lends the structure a symbolic quality alongside its architectural merit. The inclusion of such a prominent crescent-and-star motif allows the fountain to be viewed as a reflection of the urban culture and aesthetic sensibilities of the early Republican era. The fact that the fountain was built in 1933 is also significant, as this date corresponds to the early years of the Republic. Consequently, the structure stands as an example of how the fountain-building tradition, inherited from the Ottoman era, persisted into the Republican period. As a guide, I would like to remind visitors of one thing: historic structures need not always be grand fortresses, palaces, or monumental mosques. Sometimes, the best way to understand a city's past is to look at the modest structures that are part of everyday life. A fountain can tell us where people obtained water, where they met, how they socialized, and how urban life changed.
