Dear visitors, we will now explore the Seyyid Vakkas Mosque and its surroundings, which hold a special place within Giresun's historical urban fabric. This place is significant not only as a place of worship that has survived from the past to the present, but also as a destination that brings together Giresun's conquest memory, the Ottoman period, folk narratives, and urban culture. The structure, now known as Kapu Mosque, dates back to 1607-1608. The Giresun Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism states that the mosque was built by Seyyid Mehmet Pasha during this period. The inscription regarding the mosque's initial construction is currently preserved in the garden of the Giresun Museum. Over time, the structure deteriorated and became inadequate to meet the needs of the congregation. Ottoman archival documents indicate that in 1903, the mosque was in a very dilapidated state and insufficient for the surrounding congregation. Therefore, it was decided to rebuild the mosque on a larger scale. The construction costs were planned to be covered by endowed income, and a new construction process was initiated. The structure we see today is essentially the mosque that was renovated in 1896 by Karamustafaoğlu Mahmut Esat. Therefore, here we see a historical past that began in the 17th century and the architectural understanding of the 19th century meeting within the same building.
