Tirebolu (Saint Jean) Castle

I would now like to introduce you to Tirebolu Castle—also known as Saint Jean Castle—one of the iconic landmarks of Tirebolu. Situated on a natural peninsula extending into the Black Sea within the town center, the castle boasts an impressive appearance due to its location right by the water. It is believed that the structure originated in the Hellenistic or Roman period and was later renovated during the Pontic era, acquiring the characteristics of a medieval fortress.

The castle’s walls and arched entrance gate, constructed from rough-hewn and rubble stone, have largely survived to the present day. Within the castle grounds, there are the remains of a small structure—historically known as the Church or Chapel of the Virgin Mary—as well as the ruins of a small mosque (*mescit*) and Ottoman-era tombstones. Today, with its historical character, sea views, and peninsula location, Tirebolu Castle welcomes visitors as one of Giresun’s significant cultural heritage sites.
