Şifaiye Madrasa

Welcome to the Şifaiye Madrasa, located in the historical city center of Sivas, among the magnificent works of the Seljuk period. Built in 1217 by Sultan İzzeddin Keykavus I of Anatolia, this structure served as one of the most important medical education and health centers of its time. Constructed from cut stone, the madrasa reflects the scientific and health understanding of the era with its spacious courtyard, arcades, student and treatment rooms. The geometric and floral decorations on the monumental main gate showcase elegant examples of Seljuk stonework. Within the madrasa is also the tomb of Sultan İzzeddin Keykavus I, who died in Sivas in 1220. The brick and tile decorations of the tomb are one of the most striking features of the building. The Şifaiye Madrasa, where people found healing and physicians were trained centuries ago, is today an important heritage reflecting the scientific, artistic, and cultural history of Sivas. While strolling through its courtyard, you can closely observe not only the architectural mastery of the Anatolian Seljuks but also the importance they placed on medicine and education.
