Buruciye Madrasah

Welcome to the Buruciye Madrasa, located in the historic city square of Sivas and one of the finest examples of Anatolian Seljuk architecture. Built in 1271 by Muzaffer Burucerdi, a prominent figure of the time, the madrasa served as an important educational center, particularly for the teaching of sciences such as physics, chemistry, and astronomy. Constructed from cut stone, the building is a successful example of the classic Seljuk madrasa plan with four iwans (vaulted halls) and an open courtyard. The geometric patterns, plant motifs, and fine stonework on its magnificent main gate are among the most striking features of the building. The arcades surrounding the courtyard and the student rooms carry the traces of 13th-century Anatolian educational life to the present day. Having managed to stand for centuries, the Buruciye Madrasa is today a living historical venue hosting cultural events. While strolling through its courtyard, you can closely examine the elegance of Seljuk architecture and feel the scientific, educational, and cultural heritage of Sivas stretching back centuries.
